Juz and Hizb Navigation

Background

For the purpose of memorizing the Quran, the net body of text from beginning to end is divided into 60 equal sections called Hizb (some pronounce as Hizib).

Each 2 consecutive Hizb is called a Juz.  Thus there are 30 Juz in the Quran.

Hizb 1 and 2 make up Juz 1, Hizb 3 and 4 make up Juz 2, and so on.

Furthermore, each Hizb is divided into 1/4s; each quarter Hizb is called a Rubu3 (which actually means quarter).

Notes:

  1. 30 Juz (meaning parts) are of practical significance as they facilitate the planned reading or recitation of the Holy Book in its entirety over one month, particularly during the blessed fasting month of Ramadan.
  2. Some countries eg. Libya and Morocco have additional tiny graphic/glyphs markers (inline) for indicating the 1/8th's of Hizb. 1/8th of a Hizb is called Thumun (also pronounced Thumn).
  3. So, the Qur'an can have the following 3 to 4 subdivisions categories:

    1. 30 Juz
    2. 60 Hizb
    3. 240 Rubu3 (60 x 4 = 240 quarters)
    4. 480 Thumun (60 x 8 = 480 1/8ths)

Ornament markers and graphical inscriptions inline or in the margin will indicate the beginning of a Thumun, Rubu3, Hizb or Juz. Also the use of red ink or bold facing the beginning few words to indicate these subdivisions is found in some manuscripts.

  4. A large chapter may span several Juz and Hizb, and likewise a Juz or a Hizb may span several very short chapters.
